Highlights
Bach’s St John Passion and Mozart’s Requiem are pillars of classical music which have attracted audiences world-wide for many centuries. Both are full of drama contrasted by deeply moving melodies and harmonies. Music for the soul!
Likewise, Monteverdi’s Vespers 1610 with its seven vocal soloists, ten-part chorus and large orchestra is regarded as one of the towering masterpieces of the Baroque era.
Continuing a tradition of offering NZ premieres, this year we present the Mass in G minor by Bach’s oldest son Wilhelm Friedeman and the Christmas Oratorio by Bach’s contemporary Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel, who at the time was as highly regarded as Bach himself!
There is more famous Bach (Double Concerto for Violin & Oboe and Cantata 191), but we also venture into the 20th century with the joyful and triumphant Magnificat by John Rutter, one of the most popular English composers in history.
A special treat not to be missed is one of the most outstanding young musical talents New Zealand has produced: oboist Thomas Hutchinson will perform the beautiful Strauss Oboe Concerto, widely regarded as the greatest concerto ever written for the instrument.
